INTERVIEW DE PETER GAGE (Novembre 2012)

Bonjour Pete, un grand merci de répondre à mes questions :
Francis : Pour débuter, concernant ta période avec Dr Feelgood, le public français pose toujours la même question : Pete a t’il quitté le groupe ou est ce le groupe qui l’a viré ?
Pete : Ils m’ont viré.
Francis : Pourquoi ?
Pete : Je n’ai pas envie de revenir là dessus. Les membres du groupe le savent, je le sais.
Bien sûr, mes années avec Dr Feelgood furent très importantes. Mais la fin naturelle était arrivée. Je devais passer à autre chose.
Francis : Après le décès de Lee, nous avons été très surpris de trouver le disque On The Road Again qui est l’un des meilleurs de la discographie Feelgood. J’assistais quelques jours plus tard à un concert en France avec toi et ce fut incroyable : tu étais le frère de Lee et le public était aux anges. Quels souvenirs as-tu de cette période ?
Pete : Merci de ces gentils mots au sujet du frère de Lee ! Mais je pense que Lee était un artiste vraiment très, très spécial. C’était un grand honneur de tenir la place de Lee. J’étais très fier et heureux de savoir que les gens pensaient : Il est assez bon pour la chose. Le groupe et moi avons été de très bons amis durant les deux premières années. C’était bon.

Francis : as-tu eu ton mot à dire sur le choix des chansons de On The Road Again ?
Pete : Oui, bien sûr. Dave Bronze et Kevin voulaient que je sois à l’aise avec les chansons.
Francis : Sais-tu s’il y a des inédits de ces sessions ?
Pete : Je ne le pense pas.
Francis : tu as été membre de Dr Feelgood pendant 4 ans, avez-vous parlé d’un deuxième album studio ou d’un album live ?
Pete : Parfois nous en avons parlé, mais pas plus que cela.
Francis : Il y a un bootleg qui s’appelle : They Do It Right enregistré en Suisse. Le son étant très bon, beaucoup ont pensé à la pré-production d’un album live jamais sorti. Vrai ou faux ?

Pete : Faux.
Francis : Mes chansons préférées (sur on The Road Again) sont le terrible boogie Instinct To Survive, Goin Out West et Repo Man. Qu’en penses-tu ?
Pete : Ce sont toutes des bonnes chansons, mais ma préférée est World Keeps On Turning.

Francis : Après ton départ de Dr Feelgood, ils publièrent Chess Masters qui est aussi, à mon avis, un des meilleurs de la discographie Feelgoodienne. Qu’en penses-tu ?
Pete : Il est bien, mais je préfère les chansons du début avec Wilko et surtout Gypie.

Francis : Dernière question sur Dr Feelgood et je comprendrais très bien que tu ne répondes pas : Après Chess Masters est sorti Speeding Thru Europe (live compilation) et Repeat Prescriptions (re-recordings) qui sont pour beaucoup de fans deux des plus mauvais albums du groupe. Quelle est ton opinion ?
Pete : Je ne les ai pas écoutés.
Francis : Nous sommes beaucoup de fans à espérer ton retour dans le groupe. Est-ce possible ?
Pete : Non.
Francis : Parlons maintenant de Peter Gage. Peux-tu-nous en dire plus sur toi et ton expérience musicale ?
Pete : Je suis un pianiste de blues et un chanteur, j’écris aussi des chansons. J’aime toutes sortes de musique d’avant ou après guerre. J’aime écouter et jouer de la country du folk et du blues sur ma guitare. Mon meilleur partenaire musical est un guitariste nommé Paul Hartshorn. Paul et moi avons enregistré beaucoup de chansons. Francis : Pouvons nous nous procurer des disques de Peter Gage ? Peux-tu les décrire ?

Francis : Tu donnes souvent des concerts avec le Pete Gage Band, pourrons nous t’entendre rapidement en France ?
Pete : Si tu m’invites, je viendrais. Je peux travailler avec des musiciens français.
Francis : Ti as participé récemment à un groupe qui s’appelle The Real Goods avec Gypie Mamo, The Big Figure ans Sprako, est-ce un projet à long terme ?
Pete : C’était merveilleux de jouer uniquement les chansons de Gypie. C’est un grand musicien et Sparko et The big Figure sont des mecs biens. Je les aime. La tournée au Japon en décembre 2011 était vraiment très spéciale.
Francis : Pouvons-nous espérer un disque ?
Pete : Non.
Francis : Sur www.theinmates.fr , nous avons une rubrique nommée : Coup de cœur. Ton album solo « Thought Talk » y a été chroniqué. C’est un très bon album avec Gypie Mayo en plus. Que peux-tu nous dire de ce disque ?
Pete : « Thought Talk » a été produit par Juha Takanen en Finland. Je suis allé en Finland pour travailler avec mes bons amis de là-bas. Douze chansons écrites par moi-même et trois reprises. J’ai enregistré les guitares de Gypie par la suite, dans sa maison à Bath en Angleterre et j’ai envoyé les pistes de guitares à Juha.

Francis : Ma Chanson préférée est Thought That Talk Boogie, est-ce toi qui joue du piano ?
Pete : Oui.
Francis : Bad Feeling est une très bonne chanson, le riff de basse ressemble à If My Baby Quits Me. Es-tu d’accord ?
Pete : Oui
Francis : Au début de Victim Of Your Love, nous entendons une slide guitare avec un son digne de George Harrison. Qui joue ? Est ce un fan des Beatles ?
Pete : C’est Hannu Pikkarainen. Un grand guitariste qui vit près d’Helsinki en Finlande.
Francis : Peux-tu nous donner des informations personnelles ? Ta date de naissance, ton parcours musical ?
Pete : Je suis né le 12 fevrier 1946 à Londres, mon école était Battersea à Londres aussi.
Mon passé musical est celui-ci : J’ai été musicien de blues dans le milieu des années 60 et je fus d’abord remarqué par la puissance de ma voix. Je joue aussi du piano et de l’harmonica, mais il ne fait pas me confondre avec un autre Pete Gade de Vinegar Joe ! Mon premier engagement fut en 1967 avec l’ex bassiste des Shadows Jet Harris (Jet Harris Band), nous jouions dans le circuit des clubs britannique. Ensuite, je suis passé dans le circuit blues de Londres en créant mon propre groupe local : Blues Faction puis dans le blues/Soul : The Blazers. Je suis parti dans l’ouest de l’Angleterre au milieu des années 80 et j’ai fais équipe avec un guitariste virtuose : Paul Hartshorn dans le groupe culte : The Pink Torpedo. Quand Dr Feelgood a perdu son frontman, Lee Brilleaux, d’un cancer, j’ai relevé le défi de me glisser dans ses chaussures et j’ai tourné avec le groupe pendant 4 ans partout en europe. Nous avons reçu un très bon accueil de la part des fans, même les plus fervents. Depuis 2000, j’ai continué de travailler avec Paul Hartshorn, notablement avec le Pete Gage band, jouant du blues avec une touche de godspel. Je suis aussi « Frontman » dans le groupe Mike Hoddinott Blues All-Stars et j’ai fais équipe avec l’ex guitariste de Doctor Feelgood Gypie Mayo pour fomer The Monumentals. En decembre 2011, Gypie avec The Big Figure et Sparko avons formé : The Realgoods et nous avons tourné au Japon avec Eddie And The Hot Rods. Je suis en ce moment en train d’écrire et d’enregistrer de nouvelles chansons en collaborant avec des artistes tels que Paul Hartshorn, Gypie Mayo, Innes Sibun, Jon Amor, Midge Ure and Arto Makela, and Duncan Kingston. Francis : Quelles sont tes plus grandes influences musicales ? Artistes ou groupes.
Pete : Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Chris Farlowe, Charlie Mingus, Thelonious Monk.
Francis : Sur une île déserte, tu pars avec quel unique album ?
Pete : Otis Redding "Sings Soul Ballads".
Francis : Comme tu le sais, nous sommes sur un site qui concerne principalement les Inmates. Connais-tu personnellement un ou plusieurs d’entre eux ?
Pete : Non.
Francis : Quel est ton album préféré des Inmates ?
Pete : First offence, c’était brut et orageux ! Bill Hurley est un grand chanteur.
Francis : Quelle est ta chanson préférée des Inmates et pourquoi ?
Pete : Dirty Water, car dans leur version, elle parle de ma ville : Londres.

First of all, regarding your Feelgood period, the french audiance ask always the same things : Was Pete who lefted the band or the band who sacked Pete ?
……They sacked me.
Why ?
……..I didn't want to be there any more. The band members knew it, I knew it too.
I had too many other things I wanted to do in my musical life

After Lees’s Death, we was very surprised to find the cd “On The Road Again”, which is one of the better of all Feelgood’s discography. I Saw , few days after, one gig in France and it was incredible : You was Lee’s Brother and the audiance was very happy. What souvenirs do you have of this period ?
…….thank you for your kind words about being Lee's brother. but I think Lee Brilleaux was a very, very special artist. it was a great feeling to stand where Lee stood. i was very proud and happy that so many people thought I was good enough. the band and me were very good friends in the first 2 years - it was good
Did you have some choice regarding the selected songs of On The Road Again ?
………yes of course, Dave Bronze & Kevin Morris wanted me to be happy with the songs
Do you know if there’s any outakes ?
……..i don't think so
You was in the band during four years, did you talked about a second studio album or a live album ?
…….sometimes we talked about it, but nothing more than that
There’s one bootleg called “ They Do It Right” recorded in Switzerland. The sound is very good. Some people think that it’s a pre-producing live album of Dr Feelgood. Thrue or false ?

My Favorites songs is the crazy boogie : Instinct To Survive, Goin Out West and Repo Man. What is your opinon ?
…… these are all good songs, but my favourite is "world keeps on turning"
After your departure, Dr Feelgood published “Chess Masters” who is, for me, on of the best , too, of all Feelgood’s Cd. What is your opinin regarding this one ?
…….it's ok, but I prefer the early material with wilko and especially gypie

Last questions about The Feelgood and i will understand that you don’t want to answer : Since Chess Masters, they published Speeding Thru Europe (live compilaton) and Repeat presriptions (re-recording of Feelgood’s best numbers with new arrangements, who are for many fans, two of the badest albums of the band. Can you tell us your opinion?

………i am a blues pianist and vocalist, and I write songs. I like all kinds of music pre and
post-war blues and jazz. I like to listen and to play country styles, folk/blues styles on the guitar, I LOVE playing the piano. My best musical partner is a guitarist called Paul Hartshorn. ………"Tough Talk" was produced by Juha Takanen in Finland. I went to Finland to work with my good friends fro Finland. 12 songs written by me, and 3 covers. I recorded Gypie's guitar later, in Gypie's house in Bath, England, and I sent the guitar tracks to Juha.
My favorite song is Thought Talk Boogie, is it you who played piano ?

Do not confuse me with Pete Gage from Vinegar Joe!
My first break was in 1967 with iconic ex-Shadows bassist Jet Harris's band, playing the British club circuit. I then moved on to the London blues circuit, fronting my own band london-based band Blues Faction and blues/soul band The Blazers.
I moved to the west of England in the late 80's and teamed-up with local guitar-virtuoso Paul Hartshorn for three years in the cult band The Pink Torpedoes. When legendary R&B band Dr Feelgood lost their frontman Lee Brilleaux to cancer, I took-up the challenge of stepping into Lee's shoes, touring with the band for four years throughout Europe, receiving great accolades from the die-hard fans.
Since 2000, I have continued to work with Paul Hartshorn, notably in The Pete Gage Band, playing deep and soulful blues with a distinct touch of gospel. I am also frontman in the Mike Hoddinott Blues All-Stars, and I teamed-up with ex-Feelgood guitarist Gypie Mayo (Milk & Alcohol/Down to the Doctors) to form The Monumentals. In December 2011, Gypie and two Dr Feelgood founder members, John "Sparko" Sparkes (bass) and "The Big Figure" (drums) , and myself, reformed as“The Realgoods” and toured Japan with support from Eddie and the Hotrods.
I am currently writing and recording new material, collaborating with artists such as Paul Hartshorn, Gypie Mayo, Innes Sibun, Jon Amor, Midge Ure and Arto Makela, and Duncan Kingston.
